Your route to practising in UK courts.

Prepare for the high standards of the English and Welsh Bar, with BTT training designed by highly skilled and specialist qualified barristers. Through engaging workshops and self-study resources, you’ll cover the core skills you need to demonstrate in the Bar Transfer Test, from professional ethics, civil litigation and advocacy to opinion writing, drafting, conference skills and legal research.

The complete training and assessment programme runs three times a year and allows you to sit your required modules at a timetable of your convenience.

The BTT runs in Spring (March – May with applications opening in February), Summer (July – September with applications opening in June) and Winter (November – January with applications opening in October). Course Details

Who is the course for?
The Bar Transfer Test is designed for solicitors, lawyers qualified in other jurisdictions, and legal academics to get the certification they need to practise as a barrister in England and Wales. 

Exemptions
Before studying for the Bar Transfer Test, you need to apply for an exemption letter through the BSB. Once this has been received, you will have five years to complete the Bar Transfer Test.  
Depending on your qualifications and experience, you may be exempt for some of the requirements for training at the Bar. To be granted an exemption, you’ll need to submit an application to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) detailing your qualifications and professional experience. Language requirements
To sit the Bar Transfer Test, you’ll need a high level of oral and written English language skills. We would strongly advise that a score of 7.5 on the International English Language Test be attained before commencing the programme. However, there are other ways we can test your English ability. How is the course delivered?
You’ll study for the Bar Transfer Test through our innovative online systems designed to prepare you for your assessments. Your learning materials will be accessible online, anytime through the BPP Hub, available a month before your first training session. Alongside training sessions, you’ll be provided with the BSB handbook, mock papers and syllabus for each component to support your self-study.

Civil Litigation and Evidence Module
Assessment (in-person) / UK or Overseas
One assessment across two papers; paper one is two hours closed book and paper two is two and a half hours open book, with seven rolling case scenarios of five questions and five standalone questions 
Training (online)
Two days of training and a four-hour revision webinar 

Conference Skills Module
Assessment (online) / UK or Overseas
20-minute oral assessment via Microsoft Teams, consisting of a conference in a criminal case with a client played by an actor
Training (online)
Two-part workshop, compromising small group workshops and a performance of a mock assessment with feedback from your trainer

Criminal Litigation and Evidence Module
Assessment (in-person) - UK or Overseas
Three-hour closed book, supervised assessment consisting of multiple-choice or single best answer questions
Training (online)
Two days of training and a four-hour revision webinar

Drafting Module
Assessment (in-person) / UK or Overseas
Three-hour supervised assessment, where you are required to draft a statement of case. One week prior to the assessment, you will be supplied with a briefing sheet outline the broad areas of law which will form the basis of the assessment

Opinion Writing and Legal Research Module
Assessment (seven-day coursework)  (online Submission)
You’ll receive a set of case papers and (depending on your assessment needs) are required to: 1) undertake legal research and write a 4000-word opinion; and 2) produce a 2000-word legal research trail

Two-part workshop inclusive of a mock assessment and a two-hour revision webinar

Professional Ethics Module
Assessment (in-person) / UK or Overseas
Two-hour closed book, supervised assessment consisting of multiple-choice or single best answer questions
Training (online)
One-day training session and two-hour revision webinar

Submission Advocacy (Civil Application)
Assessment (online) or in person at LCLS(South) premises 
15-minute oral assessment consisting of making a civil application, plus a marked written component comprising a skeleton argument

Training (online)
Training in submission advocacy forms part of a three-day advocacy training event, consisting of lectures, practical training and a mock assessment. There is also a further two-hour submission advocacy (civil applications) workshop which you may opt to attend

Witness Handling (Cross-exam & Examination in chief)
Assessment (online) or in person at LCLS(South) premises 
Each assessment consists of a 15-minute oral performance via Microsoft Teams, examining a witness played by an actor

Training (online)
Training in witness handling forms part of a three-day advocacy training event, consisting of lectures, practical training and mock assessments in examination in chief and cross examination. There is also a further two-hour witness handling (mini-trial) workshop which you may opt to attend

How much is the Bar Transfer Test UK?

The Bar Transfer Test cost varies depending on the number of subjects you are required to take. Course and examination Fees typically range between £2,00 to £6,000. In additional to the Course and examination fee there are other associated costs such as BSB exemption application free, Inn membership and session fee, LCLS(south) Tuition academic fee, etc.
