Professional Experience
Altaf is a qualified barrister (non-practising) and solicitor (non-practising) of England and Wales, and an advocate of the High Courts of Pakistan.
Altaf started his career with a US law firm in London, specialising in offshore finance and technology companies. He subsequently completed his pupillage at Hardwicke Chambers, Lincoln’s Inn, which included appearances before the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Appeal.
Altaf subsequently worked as an Associate in the Banking Department of Linklaters in London, where he specialized in private equity, leveraged finance and restructuring transactions. Altaf then moved as Senior Legal Counsel to the Royal Bank of Scotland, advising on the sale of WorldPay, and then as the Deputy General Counsel of the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank in the UAE.
Altaf is currently an equity partner in the full service national law firm of Ijaz Ahmed & Associates in Karachi (which is part of the Dentons Nextlaw Network) where he advises on cross border matters with leading international law firms and multinational clients. He is a key partner at this Chambers & Partners and Legal500 recommended law firm.
His practice covers banking and finance, restructuring and insolvency, companies and M&A, securities and capital markets, infrastructure and projects, commercial transactions and cross border investments (including Chinese from One Belt, One Road).
Altaf’s law firm relationships include Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy, Freshfields, Dentons, Clyde & Co, HFW, White & Case, Latham & Watkins, Milkbank, Linklaters, Cleary Gottlieb, Watson Farley & Williams and Quinn Emanuel amongst others, including regional and smaller firms in key jurisdictions. He is also an Associate Member (also known as a door tenant) with Hardwicke Chambers, Lincoln’s Inn.
Altaf is passionate about technology and entrepreneurship and is also the co-founder of Wukla (an automated contract generator) and PakSign (an electronic signature
platform), both focused on the legal services industry in Pakistan, and which won the HBL Innovation Challenge 2017.
Altaf previously taught EU and Constitutional Law at L’ecole in Karachi for the external University of London bachelors of law program and currently teaches Corporate Governance at the Institute of Business Administration to business students.
He has published a report for Transparency International, an article for the Cleary Gottlieb Emerging Markets Restructuring Journal and shortly a global guide for Thomson Reuters Practical Law.
Altaf holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and a Master in Laws (LL.M) from Columbia University (which included an externship at the United Nations). He was also awarded the Jules Thorn Scholar by the Honourable Society at Middle Temple.
